We are looking for a Quantum Measurement Physicist to help codesign the readout architecture for a topological quantum computer.

Responsibilities

Microsoft’s Quantum group is exploring ways to build a full-stack quantum computer and has become the world’s center of expertise on topological quantum computing. The development effort includes a staff of theoretical and experimental teams around the world, who have been designing and optimizing all aspects of the quantum computer, from topological qubit designs, to cryogenic control and readout circuitry, to runtime software and quantum language compilers. Supporting this research and development effort requires motivated individuals to contribute new breakthroughs, ideas, and results in a fast-paced team environment.

Key Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Design and test readout circuitry for topological qubits

  • Design, conduct, and analyze experiments to benchmark qubit readout and theoretical models of qubit readout

  • Interface with theorists and architects to codesignthe readout system with evolving qubit designs

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years experience in industry or in a research and development environment

  • OR Master's Degree in Physics, Engineering, or related field

  • OR equivalent experience

  • 2+ years of experience in low-energy experimental quantum science

  • Design and layout of microwave circuits

  • An in-depth understanding of quantum measurement and concepts like measurement strength, efficiency, and backaction

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

  • Citizenship & Citizenship Verification: This role will require access to information that is controlled for export under export control regulations, potentially under the U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations or Export Administration Regulations, the EU Dual Use Regulation, and/or other export control regulations. As a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be required to provide proof of citizenship, U.S. permanent residency, or other protected status (e.g., under 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3)) for assessment of eligibility to access the export-controlled information. To meet this legal requirement, and as a condition of employment, the successful candidate’s citizenship will be verified with a valid passport. Additional or Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in experimental physics, Electrical Engineering or related discipline

  • 4+ years of experience in low-energy experimental quantum science

  • Expert in at least one RF readout technique used in solid-state qubit devices (such as RF-SETs or dispersive readout)

  • Hands-on skills in RF measurement techniques (VNA; heterodyne detection; cryogenic amplification) and resonator characterization measurements

  • Operation of dilution refrigerators

  • Familiarity with basic qubit bringup and characterization

  • Experience with parametric amplification, nonreciprocity, and converters/transducers

  • Experience with semiconductor devices and spins in semiconductors

  • Experience designing scalable readout systems

  • Experience simulating the performance of quantum amplifiers and devices for analog signal processing

  • Experience with clean rooms or device fabrication

  • Installation and wiring of dilution refrigerators

Quantum Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $94,300 - $182,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $120,900 - $198,600 per year.
