Brown University Research Assistant in Providence, Rhode Island

Job Description:

The primary purpose of this position is to help the lab make progress toward its experimental goals. The Research Assistant will perform experiments using a mouse model and a cell culture model according to established research protocols, record and analyze data, provide technical assistance to lab members, and prepare equipment and components for experiments. They will also perform cell culture work, assist with lab supply inventory and ordering materials, and contribute to overall lab administration. This position may be ideal for a recent graduate.

The work in the Lee Lab will focus on understanding the mechanism controlling host-virus interactions in cells and animals, such as how the host controls viral infection and how viruses counteract against the host immune system. The goal is to identify novel cellular genes/molecules to cure and prevent infectious diseases caused by viruses. This work will rely on a mouse model with a variety of knock-out and knock-in mouse lines to investigate viral pathogenesis, and a cell culture model to discover novel anti-viral or pro-viral cellular genes. To achieve these goals the Research Assistant will provide technical assistance, and coordinate laboratory research according to established laboratory protocols.

This is a fixed-term position with a current end date of 6/30/2026, which may be extended based on available funding.

Job Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or related science.

  • Required: Basic knowledge of laboratory approaches and techniques in the areas of molecular biology and cell culture (grade 7).

  • Required: 1-2 years of experience in the areas of molecular biology and cell culture (grade 8).

  • Or, equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience within the field of Microbiology is advantageous.

  • Some familiarity working with mice is a plus.

Job Competencies

  • Must be willing and able to provide technical support to laboratory personnel.

  • Must be willing and able to conduct maintenance and organization of laboratory research activities.

  • Must be willing to work with mildly infectious organisms.

  • Writing is an integral part of the research process and as a result, strong written communication skills are critical for success in this position.

  • Must interact well with other laboratory personnel, with members of the University community, and with outside vendors.

  • Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community

  • Willing and able to conduct some aspects of the work involving handling of hazardous and infectious materials.

  • Demonstrated dependability, productivity, and self-motivation as well as the desire and ability to think critically and solve problems.

  • This position frequently communicates to faculty and staff who inquire about their research. Must be able to exchange accurate information.
