Job purpose

The role holder is responsible for leading software design, development and test within the BT Smart Hub development team. The core purpose of this role is to contribute to the development of BTs new broadband router software development strategy, in-sourcing the developing capability for our next generation hardware platforms.

The role holder will set the direction for technical developments of the Hub software backlog, utilising Agile development methodologies, in line with industry technical standards and the strategic needs of BT’s broadband product set. The role holder will be expected to act as a lead development engineer and point of contact for the wider TV & Broadband team and related component teams.

The role holder will work as part of an Agile software development team and will be expected to develop and deliver high quality code in support of BTs world class broadband products.

Key responsibilities

  • Development team leadership with responsibility for the design and development of Hub software.

  • Help drive BT’s strategic roadmap for Hub software and developing product requirements in support of the business needs and the capability of evolving technology.

  • Technical leadership and development of software components.

  • Driving test strategy best practices with a primary emphasis on automated testing

  • Key contributor to the development of BT owned software components

  • Prioritisation of design team activities in line with project developments, BT’s strategy, and product line requirements.

  • Full accountability for the quality and delivery of own technical work.

  • Receives assignments in the form of objectives.

  • Establishes own milestones, team objectives and delegates assignments where applicable.

Skills required

  • Demonstrable experience in embedded systems software design and development, using the C programming language.

  • Experience in Linux kernel and driver development is preferred.

  • Strong scripting skills, e.g. bash, Python

  • Experienced team leader, able to motivate and direct others with prior line management experience, is preferred.

  • Extensive expertise in building and debugging software for embedded systems development, with demonstrable experience of shell scripting, debugging tools, e.g. gdb.

  • Use of code revision, issue tracking and continuous integration tools, e.g. git, Jira, Jenkins or Travis

  • Understanding of the hardware and software constraints related to developing home gateways or similar consumer electronics systems

  • An understanding of home gateway chipset capabilities and limitations, with an appreciation for low-level interfacing to the hardware

  • Must be able to adopt new and emerging work methods to provide innovative solutions to meet client needs.

  • Must have experience of working with Agile delivery methodologies such as Scrum, Kanban; iterative planning and task estimation is desirable.

  • Product backlog management including task estimation

  • Strong software networking experience

  • Collaborative and innovative approach to problem solving

  • Writing and maintaining software which supports multiple platforms

  • Continuous Integration, Continuous Deployment and Test Driven Development

  • Automated test strategies
