**Shift Differentials are available for evening (7%) andnight (13%) shifts.

Provides direct and indirect patient care in a healthcare setting. The RN must effectively

collaborate with other professional disciplines to ensure effective patient care delivery and achievement

of desired patient outcomes. The Emergency Department RN provides care for patients from various

types of illness or trauma requiring emergency attention and must be able to recognize and effectively

treat life-threatening conditions across all age groups.

Requirements

Professional Proficiency Demonstrated

Responsible for understanding and adherence to the Standards/Code of Conduct, and the Corporate

Compliance Plan at St. James Health.

Ensures that all educational requirements related to Corporate Compliance are implemented and

adhered to as required by the CCP Education Plan.

Delivery of High Quality Clinical Outcomes

  1. Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as

per policy. This includes: pediatric, geriatric and the general patient population.

  1. Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain

management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain

management.

  1. Ability to revise plan of care as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment and

evaluate overall plan daily and as needed for effectiveness.

  1. Ability to perform waived testing (point-of-care testing) per Clinical Laboratory’s and

the patient care unit’s policies and procedures.

  1. Ability to interpret results of waived tests; take appropriate action on waived tests

results.

B. Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures and performs services

requiring technical and manual skills, and to perform treatments and provide services to

level licensure.

C. Follows the six (6) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors,

with a knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the

patient and their clinical condition.

D. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life

span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patient population

served. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each

patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group. Performs

patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for

patient’s age.

E. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and

reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

F. Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach

to the patient’s needs.

G. Documentation meets current standards and policies of organization and unit specific.

H. Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.

I. Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.

J. Coordinates and supervises patient care as necessary.

K. Involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care. Formulates a teaching plan

based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning, family is

included in teaching as appropriate (if applicable)

L. Applies evidence-based healthcare practices

M. Complies with policies and procedures.

N. Ensures compliance with regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.

Effective Collaboration that Helps Achieve Organizational Goals

A. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses

psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.

Functions as liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other healthcare

providers.

B. Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other

departments.

C. Communicates appropriately and clearly to Clinical Supervisor, Charge nurse, coworkers

and physicians.

D. Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family; communicates with

Social Service/Discharge Planner regarding both in hospital and post discharge needs.

E. Participates in department and/or system wide team dynamic initiatives.

F. Assists with developing priorities, goals, and action plans.

Education & Experience

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Minimum 1 year of recent ER, critical care or med/surg

experience required. BSN preferred.

License and/or Certifications

• BLS/ACLS

• NYS RN license

• TNCC, PALS Preferred

• NRP within 1 year of hire

Physical Demands

Ability to move or transfer patients with an individual effort equal to 50 lbs. Should have a full range of

body motion to successfully perform all essential functions of the job, meaning you’ll have to stand,

walk, bend, kneel, crouch and reach frequently during a 12 hour shift. Accommodations are made for

Language Ability

Ability to read, write and interpret documents in English such as safety rules, operating and

maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to read, analyze and interpret common

scientific/trade/technical journals. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from

customers, or regulatory agencies. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure

manuals. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees, patients, and vendors.

Math Ability

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common

fractions and decimals. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, rates

and ratios.
