JobSummary: Follows Laboratory and Organizational Infection Control policies, observes all standards of laboratory and organizational safety including those dealing with hazardous materials, observes strict adherence to all policies dealing with confidentiality and works within established guidelines for technical reporting. Responsible for understanding and adhering to the Code of Conduct, and the Corporate Compliance Plan (CCP) at St. James Hospital. Participates in all educational requirements related to Corporate Compliance as required by the CCP Education Plan. Must maintain current NYSDOH license and any associated education requirements for licensure. In addition to Clinical Laboratory duties, the Laboratory Operations and Quality Specialist contributes to the overall functioning of the department including matters of quality control, workflow, managing supplies, compliance in areas of regulations unique to each department.

Job Results & Essential Function

  • Daily oversight and review of daily laboratory operations and quality control to ensure regulatory compliance.

  • Function as the department technical resource on all instrumentation and provide training to staff on the equipment as needed.

  • Assist staff in evaluating problem results or instrument malfunctions and the corrective action needed.

  • Review instrument Maintenance Logs and Corrective Action Logs/QC, patient result review, water system log, Lab temperature and humidity logs daily.

  • Performs weekly QC review and monthly peer data review.

  • Administer proficiency testing programs, review results and submit reports to review with Laboratory Manager and determine action.

  • Maintains a clean work area, and ensure staff are monitoring and keeping their areas clean. Evaluates area for issues and ensures daily requirements are completed.

  • Performs patient testing occasionally (may vary depending upon training and workflow needs), complete all computer functions required and assist Techs with the workload as needed.

  • Provide new staff Orientation by explaining techniques and background for methodology and instrumentation, convey the information clearly and accurately. Coordinate the training of new personnel between yourself and the Key Operators in all Lab areas.

  • Ensure the following personal protective equipment is being used: 1) Goggles/glasses 2) Gloves 3) Lab Coat 4) Respiratory Face Mask.

  • Sign and archive analyzer Maintenance Logs, Corrective Action Logs, Temperature Logs, Manual QC/Night Shift Duty Logs, Water System Logs monthly, and Microscope Cleaning and Eyewash Station Testing Logs Annually.

  • Provides timely resolution and feedback to relevant personnel for reported non-conformances.

  • Coordinate the completion of computer functions required for patient testing with Enterprise LIS Coordinator.

  • Perform duties as requested by the Laboratory Manager and/or Pathologist to include QC and QA monitoring, ensuring performance of all analyzer maintenance plus 6-month instrument correlations and calibration/verifications by Key Operators, monitoring and review of QMS and Audit/Tracer reports provided by Key Operators, and introduce new performance improvement initiatives.

  • Evaluate and train staff.

  • Oversee, receive and maintain Lab Staff Competencies on instrument operation, maintenance and troubleshooting (Initial, 6-Month, Annual).

  • Review procedures to update/write new and ensure proper approval of the policy change before implementation.

  • Possesses critical thinking skills.

  • Order supplies for departments to include Standing Orders and Materials Management stock items.

  • Must be able to stand and walk most of the day, occasionally sitting.

  • Other Duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or Equivalent and NYS Licensure required.

  • Four years as a Medical Technologist, according to NYS regulations, required.

  • Previous Quality Assurance and/or Department Lead experience within a lab setting preferred.

Licenses and/or Certifications

  • Current NYS CLT licensure

Physical Demands

Must be able to remain in a standing position 50% of the time, move about within the work area, access file cabinets, copier and fax machines, walk to transport specimens, communicate, converse and exchange information and move, transport or position a minimum weight of 50 lbs.

Language Ability

Ability to read, write and interpret documents in English such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific/trade/technical journals. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers or regulatory agencies. Ability to speak clearly to patients and staff as well as physicians.

Math Ability

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and make responsible decisions.

Working Conditions

Potential exposure to chemicals and communicable diseases and related waste (including bodily fluids).

Salary Description

$41.00 - $47.00
